Today I want to talk about adultery - such an exciting topic, am I right?
I was talking to my friend one day when we got into this topic. He said that, Biblically, there are only two things that are grounds for divorce:
1. Abandonment by an unbeliever (Matthew 5:32)
2. Sexual Immorality (1 Corinthians 7:15)
He also stated that the Bible says that we should always try to work things out with our spouse and try to stay for the sake of the children. If nothing can be resolved, we then can divorce, but cannot remarry because we are still tied to the old spouse, until things are reconciled, we cannot marry anyone else.
I had a number of problems with his statement.
First, let me say this:
In no way, shape, or form am I a super scholar that knows the Bible like the back of my hand - I'm working on that part; however, what I do have is a relationship and understanding with God. We talk and He explains things to me. Do I always get it? Nope. But do I try to understand? Yes.
Now, let's continue.....
Understand, I am not an advocate for divorce. Why? Because God doesn't like it (Malachi 2:16). However, I do believe there are times when it it necessary.
Years ago in church, I heard someone explain the whole concept of marriage explained this way:
Marriage is like a contract. There are certain things as a wife/husband you are supposed to do. When you say your"I did" and sign that licence, you signed the contract. If you don't live up to your duties, you void that contract.
Now don't take this to say, "Oh, Jessica is implying that, if he doesn'stress the way you like or if she doesn't cook like I like, I can divorce him/her." No. Don't do that.
What I mean is, husbands, you promised to love his wife as God loves the church. Wives are supposed to submit to their husbands.
If you don't do that, then you voided the contract!
God wants us to have peace in our households, not discord. And the God I know and love wouldn't want me to stay in a situation where my husband was beating me senseless, sleeping around on me, not providing for the family, etc.
Would God do that to us? No. So why would he want some man or woman to?
Just think about that....I'll be back next week to speak more on this subject.
