What's in a Name?

You all know how much I love reading random articles and YouTube videos. Well here we go again!

I recently stumbled upon a video by BuzzFeed entitled, What Boys Think of Girl Names. In the video, a group a guys sit down, hear some female names, and discuss what their opinions are on certain female names.

And if you didn't think it could get more interesting. I discovered that they turned the tables! Below is What Girls Think of Boy Names.

I found both of the videos entertaining and interesting. It's amazing what people assume simply from hearing a name! Nobody was shown a picture of a girl named Jess or a guy named William; they just saw the name and made their assumptions.

This brings up the question: can the name parents give their children influence the way their child will turn out or be perceived? Why is it okay for people to name their children Jesus but not Adolph? Why do people respect the name Leah more than the name LaTisha? Why are employees more likely to hire Jason than Jerome?

Names are indeed a powerful thing that people really  need to think about when passing them along.

What do you think? How important is a name?

  1. I think parents need to think long and hard about what they name they give their kids because it will follow them their whole life.

  3. I'll definitely watch these videos! As I study English, we tend to look into names briefly and discuss what impression they give before we actually look at characters. But I've never really thought about it in the real world before, but like the questions you've asked are really interesting!

  5. It is sad but true that is why I thought before I named my kids. I did not want people to make assumption or deny them a job because they assume they know what they represent. I tell everyone how will this name look on a resume lol

  6. Yeah it's definity something to ponder when you choose your child's name. And one or the sad things is a name can remind someone of something else.

  7. Naming is such a personal thing and I do sometimes wonder if parents think through their name ideas before choosing them. I agree, it is rare you meet a successful person with an obscure name, like Apple or Peel.

  10. I believe one shouldn't be defined by their name. It does not define who they are, however some employees will and have discriminated and bypassed a great resume due to the name. It is very unfortunately. Parents must take naming their children seriously, as it can be a problem for them in the future.

  15. I think names are important, but I also think that any preconceived notions can be over riden by actually getting to know the person. I like to browse YouTube videos too. God bless! :)

  17. We do family names as a way to honor past generations and our roots. I'm not into trendy/dated names at all!
