Weekly Blessings:Week 6

Sunday, August 3, 2014

This week's inspiration for "Weekly Blessings" came to me literally yesterday morning while I was in the shower. Never know where you'll get your lesson from, huh?

We as people, and more specifically,Christians are so quick to judge other people's pasts and current situations. We need to learn that we can't compare someone else's mindset to our own and we can never really be sure how we'd react in a situation. Just as easily as they "fell short," we could too, so we don't need to be so quick to look at them sideways(Romans 3:23).

We have no Heaven or Hell to put them in, and we know we don't; why do we still choose to be negative towards them?! They shouldn't even be worried about us; their situation is between them and the only one who matters--God. Not to mention the fact that it shows what kind of Christian you really are. So who's really looking bad in the end? This is described in Matthew 7:2-5 perfectly:

For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you.And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me cast out the mote out of thine eye; and lo, the beam is in thine own eye?Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Just because they sin differently from you doesn't mean that they aren't as good as you, and it definitely doesn't mean that you are perfect(Romans 2:23)!

For example, there may be a girl who is being abused by her bf or is pregnant out of wedlock. We're quick to say,"I would've fought back/left him," or "She knows we're supposed to wait until marriage!" However, if put in the same exact scenario, you may have done exactly what she did or dealt with the things she did.

Heck, I've seen some people down other people for their mistakes when they made the same one, maybe even multiple times, not too long ago!

It's things like that that caused celebrities like Brandy and Tina Turner to hide their lives for so long. Brandy didn't want to smear her image and faked a marriage in order to keep the world from finding out that she was unmarried and having a child. Tina Turner dealt with years of abuse from Ike Turner before she was finally able to leave and become the star she was born to be(I  actually watched "What's Love Got to do with It" this week; that movie never gets old!). These women were major figures in the media and had more money than most of us could ever dream. yet they still were afraid of what a group of strangers who didn't even know them would think of them. That's how powerful it is!

You never know what battles others are fighting. She may have low self-esteem or maybe she has battled with getting past the flesh and simply had a moment of weakness or maybe she just doesn't know any better. You never know!

Yes, Christians are supposed to strive for perfection; Keyword: Strive. We aren't ever going to be completely perfect, but we can get extremely close (Philippians 3:12-15). Everyone has a different battle. For some it may be alcohol, others it could be greed, others could battle with lust. Everyone is different. This is why it is so important that Christians stand as a community of compassionate individuals (Ephesians 4:32).Just as we discussed last week, if God can forgive them, we should be able to forgive them as well.

  1. This is too true, most people are quick to judge and all that shows is their lack of character.

  6. Great, great post. When you see someone judging, criticizing, or mocking another person, you can be sure that they are trying to feel better about their own shortcomings, either real or perceived.

  12. I really agree with that quote. There are so many people out there who judge people, and I thought it would get better with age -- once I was out of high school and all, but it never seems to change!

  18. I remember watching an interview with Tina Turner in more recent years. She was talking about the song what's love got to do with it. And she was just describing her life and now saying the Love has everything to do with it. I was an amazing interview of her life.

  19. Very true. People are so quick to judge others and it is sad. We don't know what is going on in someone else's life so we really do not know what they are going through.

  21. Great opening quote. Sometimes it is hard to remember that when someone is coming at you. It takes grace and maturity to master the meaning of that quote.

  22. And, this is the reason why I always go out of my way to get to know another person. Lunch out or coffee usually helps.

  23. I always try not to judge others, but it's human nature to trust our instincts and I don't ignore my instincts when I feel someone is bad-natured. I supposed that's a whole different topic though. I loved what you had to say here, thanks for sharing!

  24. It is not our job to judge other people. I think it is our jobs as Chrstians to support and help them to make the right decisions but not to judge if they slip up.
Judging others is a sign of ego and hubris thing which are both, in my humble opinion, usually the biggest sins there are. We are not supposed to judge but learn, support and guide others. When we judge and act superior we are not doing ourselves or our Lord any good.
