Weekly Blessings: Week #1

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Hello friends! *DJ Lance Rock voice* Yo Gabba Gabba reference.....don't judge me.

I want to welcome you to week 1 of my "Weekly Blessings" series! Have no idea what I'm talking about? Click here to get up to speed on what this thing is all about. Now, let's get started!

When I first started this week, I had it in my head that I would go through each day and find something to discuss;  however, I soon realized that there were two main themes working in my life this week: redemption and forgiveness.

Redemption(Definition: Deliverance; rescue)- Romans 5:8, Romans 3:22-24, Psalm 111:9
This week a friend of mine went through a couple things that the average person would probably be cramped up in a corner crying about. I won't go into detail, but these events were literally life or death situations. However, when we didn't see a way out, God did. Miraculously my friend wound up walking away unscathed and just as vibrant as he was before.

His situation showed me that, although we may face situations that look bleak, God always provides a light at the end of the tunnel. That's the great thing about God; He's always got our back and our best interest in mind. He's like our earthly parent--He wants us to be happy and safe. Yes, we may stray and disappoint Him at times, but we can't say that He doesn't try to help us. Believe it or not, He does warn us and tries to give us an escape; sometimes we're too blind to see it or wind up ignoring it, which lands us in a world of trouble, which is what happened in my friend's case. Nonetheless, God was always there, ready to lend a helping hand. Don't get me wrong, you can't abuse God's kindness, but just understand that He loves you always.

ForgivenessColossians 3:13Matthew 18: 21-22, Matthew 6:14-15
I don't think I have to define forgiveness; everyone knows what it is. But do people really know how to do it? Some people are really good at holding grudges; I'm not one of those people, but I do have a temper and it can get the best of me sometimes.

This week, I believe I was finally able to let go of the animosity I had towards someone who wronged me and simply move forward from it. How?After prayer....lots of prayer,  I realized that the only way I could really be happy again was to forgive this person for what they did to me. I mean really, what was staying mad going to do for me? It was hurting me more than it was hurting the other person, and I refuse to let someone else have that much control over me and my emotions. After I learned to forgive I felt free and much happier knowing that I wouldn't have to worry about that person anymore. People don't realize sometimes that when we constantly spend time consumed by emotions other people has brought up in us, we are subconsciously giving them a power that they don't deserve. Give that power back to God and watch how things will change.

I realized too that forgiving someone is a huge test of maturity, and not everyone is able to pass that test. This even goes for the person who did me wrong- their anger from not learning to forgive the person who they felt wronged them built up and manifested into a larger rage against me, someone who had nothing to do with what made them angry in the first place! I don't want to be that way. I want to be happy, and in order to do that I had to grow up and move on, understanding that not everyone will like you or understand you. All you can do is just keep it moving and pray that God will change those people's hearts and show them that all that anger really isn't worth it.

But I also had to remember this: God didn't say That weapons wouldn't form. He said they wouldn't prosper (Isaiah 54:17). This doesn't necessarily have to be guns and knives;  this can also be words and actions. So whatever evil was intended for me through that persons actions, it was turned around for my good simply because I chose to forgive, and for that I say thank you God!

I also wanted to share this song that has been on my heart all week:
                                                              "Yesterday"- Mary Mary

  2. Wise words! On the topic of forgiveness: I had a woman come to me and share some tensions in her marriage. Basically, her husband wasn't the Christian example she wanted him to be and she felt like he was being unfair to her. He often did things without considering her and said things in anger. I let her talk and I listened (which I think is really what she needed most). She had begun to let the idea of divorce enter her vocabulary and eventually asked what she should do. I told her to study, pray, and be the example for him. Don't give up. She sorrowfully asked me why she had to keep forgiving him when he never apologizes. With all the love and humility I had I said, "Because HE continues to forgive us and forgave us before we ever asked." Wow... I'm telling you His forgiveness amazes me everyday!
